I've noticed over the past few months quite a few developers with little to no knowledge of regular expressions (regex from here on out). For whatever reason they haven't taken the time, or had the chance, to learn what I consider to be one of the most powerful, and useful tools available in programming. Even knowing a few basics can really streamline your workflow, and improve your code. Not only are they useful IN code, but they can even help you write code. In this post I'm going to cover some regex basics, then show you some real examples of how they can solve problems for you.

If you recall, I wrote about the hardware I use in my personal development environment. That was just part one of the article though and I'm finally here to finish the job I started way back in January.

The laptop I use at work had to be reformatted. While doing so, our systems guy offered to install 64 bit Windows for me. "Great", I said, thinking that would make my computer faster. While it does seem to have made things more efficient, it's also added some obstacles to my workflow...namely that 64 bit Internet Explorer 7 can't install the Flash player since Adobe doesn't have a player for 64 bit browsers.

I've been playing phone and email tag with a client for about 2 weeks now. I finished up a website for him recently and he wanted a little training on how to maintain his site, add files, that sort of thing. The ideal situation would have been to meet at a local coffee shop or something, but we're both busy guys with families. So I suggested the idea of screen sharing. Adobe offers Acrobat Connect, there's GoToMeeting, and loads more. But he's on a Mac and I'm on a PC which made it more difficult. I started looking around online and finally found one that looked promising...Mikogo.
